Rick and Morty‘s Season 9 finale has plunged viewers into melancholy.
The episode, titled “Field of Dreams,” aired on Sunday night on Adult Swim, ahead of the debut of Rick and Morty spinoff President Curtis. And in true R&M form, the finale delivered cold hard existential truths across multiple realities.

The episode sees Morty (Harry Belden) visiting his own funerals across the multiverse, having met a version of himself at a Smith family estate sale with his grandfather Rick (Ian Cardoni). Morty has one grim goal: to hear his family say nice things about him.
IGN called the end of the episode “a proper dose of existential angst,” and it seems to be a shared sentiment among viewers, especially around the finale’s portrayal of Rick and Morty’s chaotic relationship.

And while many viewers are talking about the White House’s seemingly AI-generated attempt to jump on the Rick and Morty bandwagon, the season finale’s brutal reckoning with Rick and Morty’s tempestuous bond seems to be fans’ main meltdown.
