TL;DR: Active smart beds pump conditioned air directly through your mattress on automated schedules to stop night sweats. Sleep Number’s Black Friday sale takes up to 25% off its ClimateCool and Climate360 models through Dec. 7.
Between breathable sheets, oscillating fans, and gel-infused mattress toppers, there is no shortage of sleep gear promising to keep you cool at night. The issue with most of them is simple physics: passive materials can only absorb so much heat before they reach your body temperature, and a desk fan does little to the heat trapped beneath your back.
That is why smart beds with active, motorized temperature control have started getting traction. Instead of relying on passive fibers, these systems circulate conditioned air straight through the mattress core, running on automated schedules that adjust throughout the night to match your body’s circadian rhythm.
With holiday shopping underway, Sleep Number has launched its Black Friday sale through Dec. 7, knocking 10% to 25% off its lineup — including steep discounts on its Climate Collection. If you want to know what this actually feels like in practice, here is how the tech works.

Active cooling vs. fans and mattress pads
To see how active temperature beds work, it helps to understand how typical bedroom cooling gear handles heat. Fans and “cooling” toppers have clear limits: a fan can’t reach the heat trapped under your body, and “cooling” toppers only stay chilly until they absorb your body heat for an hour or two.
Active-temperature smart beds replace passive materials with built-in air channels and motors. Instead of simply absorbing heat, they constantly pull warm air away from your body and push conditioned air up through the surface so you never get a stagnant warm patch.
In beds with active temperature control — like the Sleep Number Climate Collection — the mattress is not simply circulating room-temperature air. It actively changes how warm or cool the bed feels around you. The ClimateCool can get each side up to 15 degrees cooler, while the Climate360 covers a full 30-degree range from cooling to warming. Because that airflow runs all night, hot spots never get the chance to settle in.
Temperature control is only half the battle
Motorized airflow is only part of the story, though. The real perk is how the bed handles comfort and support at the same time.
Inside the Sleep Number Climate Collection, the heating and cooling layers sit directly above adjustable air chambers rather than rigid springs or static foam blocks. Sleep Number uses internal sensors to monitor your movement while you sleep — so if you roll from your back over to your side at night, the air chambers automatically soften or firm up under your hips and shoulders to keep your spine aligned, without interrupting whatever cooling schedule is currently running.
Because the air chambers and airflow channels are split down the middle, you get independent dual zones on both sides of the mattress. So if one runs hot and likes sleeping on an ultra-firm slab and the other prefers a warm, plush mattress, neither person has to compromise on firmness or climate.
At the same time, embedded biometric sensors track metrics such as heart rate, breathing patterns, and restless movement without requiring you to wear a smartwatch to bed. Every morning, the app rolls all that data into a SleepIQ score from 1 to 100, giving you a quick snapshot of how restful your night was.
Is an active temperature smart bed worth it?
Dropping several thousand dollars on a mattress is a big commitment, even with holiday sales taking off a chunk of the price. Whether the investment is justified depends entirely on how severely temperature affects your sleep.
The people who get the most out of these beds are chronic hot sleepers. If you routinely wake up sweating in the middle of the night, passive cooling toppers usually cannot keep up, but steady, active airflow can.
It is also an easy fix for couples stuck in bedtime thermostat battles, since each side can run on completely independent temperature settings — or, on the Climate360, cool one side while warming the other. If you get into bed cold but wake up roasting, the Climate360 can also run automated schedules that warm your feet at bedtime, then kick on active cooling around your core later in the night.
On the other hand, if a regular room fan or breathable sheets keep you comfortable, or if you sleep alone and do not overheat, there is no need to spend the extra money on built-in airflow.
